How to Make Corrections and Update FAFSA Information

There are situations when you’ll need to make corrections and update your FAFSA information. You must update your information if your situation has changed.

Once your application has been processed, you can correct your FAFSA online or on paper. Making corrections online is the fastest and easiest option. Most information cannot be changed on the FAFSA but some information can be updated to reflect the correct information.

To make corrections to your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form, select the ”Log In” button on the US Department of Education’s Financial Aid website, and then select Make FAFSA Corrections.

When correcting your FAFSA form, you can:

• add or remove colleges from your application;
• change your email or mailing address; and/or
• correct any field in your FAFSA form other than your Social Security number.

What you CAN update on FAFSA

Most information cannot be updated because it must be accurate as of the day you originally signed your FAFSA.

For example, after filing FAFSA you spent some of your savings, you may not update your information. If your or your parents’ income has significantly changed, then speak to the financial aid office. Or if your family has other circumstances that cannot be reported on the FAFSA.

• You may update your mailing address, e-mail address, and other contact information if it has changed.
• If you want to make your FAFSA information available to an additional school after filing the FAFSA, you may add that school’s Federal School Code.

What you MUST update on FAFSA

Changes to dependency status

You must update anything that changes your dependency status (for instance, you are now pregnant or are now in legal guardianship) except for a change in your marital status. If your marital status changes, you must speak to the financial aid office to determine whether you may update the FAFSA.

Selected for verification due to changes in household members

If (and only if) you are selected for verification, you must update your FAFSA if there is a change in the number of family members in your parents’ household or in your household. If the number of family members changes as a result of a change in your (the student’s) marital status, you must speak to the financial aid office at the school you plan to attend to determine whether you may update the FAFSA.

Update if the number of college students in household changes

If (and only if) you are selected for verification, you must update your FAFSA. Additionally, if there is a change in the number of people in your parents’ household who are in college. If the number of people in college changes as a result of a change in your (the student’s) marital status, you must speak to the financial aid office at the school you plan to attend to determine whether you may update the FAFSA.
